Big Hawthorns

Today’s project was to fell a large Hawthorn on the periphery of the recently cleared ‘New Orchard’.

Cutting down was easy, dealing with the stump and roots is not. New shoots are already growing from the roots from the stump. Digging the stump by hand would not be impossible, just a lot of hard work. An effective alternative is to cover it with black plastic for a couple of years….

Maybe just wait till I get a machine in to deal with a lot of similar stumps.

Circled in red are the shoots from the root.

More welcome orchard denizen: the crabapple tree.
