Laurena Evalina is an emerging artist who was raised on Denman Island. Having recently graduated the Fine Arts Program at North Island College, she now once again calls Denman her home. The island life has shaped her love and respect for the natural world, which is both a source of inspiration and a recurring theme in her art. Working in many mediums, but most engaged in painting, she uses art as a tool for healing, as a form of play, and as a way to communicate knowledge about the natural world and the need for its preservation. Her art aims to teach viewers about the creatures she paints, and this is the first of many paintings to come that are made with the intention that a portion of the proceeds will be donated towards nature conservation.
Artist Thoughts on the painting:
I wanted to create a painting to celebrate my return to Denman, and there seemed like no better subject than the rare and delightful Taylor’s Checkerspot Butterfly. Butterflies are an archetype for transformation and so much has changed since I last called this island home. I have always held an intrest in nature conservation, so it brings me great joy to use my artistic voice to help spread awareness and create resources for preserving Denman’s wild spaces.
