A resounding success
The Denman Conservancy Association is happy to report that the 35th anniversary tour was one of the most successful ever.
Over 1,400 tickets were sold, raising $25,000 for land conservation on Denman. But the tour is not just about money—it also raised spirits, enhanced community pride, celebrated art and beauty, promoted sustainable ways of living, and spread joy.
Perfect weather, smiling faces
Tour Coordinator Erika Bland says, “Everywhere I went that weekend (and that really felt like everywhere!), I saw smiling faces. Homeowners, tired as they were, were enjoying the appreciative tour-goers and were thrilled by the awesome turnout. The weather was perfect and the gardens and homes sparkled with delights.”
None of this could have happened without the incredible generosity of many people: the homeowners who graciously opened their doors and garden gates, the 100+ local volunteers, the many Denman Island businesses and community members who provided essential support, and last but not least all the people who attended the tour. DCA extends a huge thank you to all of you!
building a conservation legacy
The first tour took place 35 years ago when DCA was in its infancy. Over the decades, it has helped this non-profit organization create an invaluable legacy of land preservation.
In 1991, when the tour was founded, only 3% of Denman Island was formally protected. Today, that number is 25%, well above the provincial average of just under 16%.
“DCA has played a big role in this achievement,” says Tour Coordinator and former DCA Lands Manager Erika Bland. “Their dogged campaigns, steadfast environmental advocacy, high-profile successes, community education programs, and of course their famed Home and Garden Tour—all have put conservation front and centre as a Denman Island priority.”
