What Do Volunteer Bullfrog Monitors Do?

  • Get to know what a Bullfrog call sounds like. Listen to calls HERE. Learn how to ID a Bullfrog compared to the frogs and toads that are native to Denman Island. Download a useful ID Guide by Peter Karsten HERE.
  • Contact Andy to arrange a specific monitoring site at a wetland close to your home. [EMAIL: lands[dot]dca@gmail.com]
  • Once per week in June (and July if you like), visit your specific monitoring site to listen for Bullfrogs:
    • Go out to your site just before dusk on warm evenings (after warm, sunny days).
    • Listen for 15 minutes each visit, record any observations, and report any bullfrogs you hear or see.

IF YOU HEAR A BULLFROG…

  • Phone two-50-858-157-zero or email lands[dot]dca@gmail[dot]com ASAP.
  • Make notes about the location and any other observations: How many calls did you hear? How frequent were they? How far away from you? Was there more than one individual?
  • Try to get an audio recording, if you can.

IF YOU SEE A BULLFROG…

  • Phone two-50-858-157-zero OR two-50-281-502-nine right away!
  • Take photos if you can, and note the exact location.
  • Under provincial law, we are not permitted to harm bullfrogs in the wild.
  • You may carefully capture it in a bucket but do not move it from the location where it was found.

Be Safe & Mindful of Wildlife…

  • Please be mindful of wildlife and their habitat while monitoring.
  • For your safety (and to protect other critters) do not enter a wetland or lake while monitoring.
  • Take care in rough terrain and wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
