‘King’ tides is ‘jargon’ for the highest tides of the year. When combined with winter storm surges, King tides can lead to flooding, debris piles or shoreline-erosion along the coast. King tides occur due to a combination of the moon and sun being on the same side of our planet, as well as the moon being at the closest point in its elliptical orbit to the Earth, creating the strongest gravitational tidal pull.
As sea levels rise due to climate change, observing the King tide levels gives us a better idea of what sea levels will be like and of the impacts of climate change in the future. Photos can also provide a valuable record of our changing coastline over time.
