Whither Hawthorns?

I wandered today in the ‘Border Woods’ which has a canopy of 30+ year old Douglas fir and mid-understory of Hawthorn. Likely the Hawthorn established when the fir trees were also starting out. Interesting that I could not find any seedling Hawthorns around in the closed canopy forest. The Hawthorns are not serving much purpose here: not decorative or a sight screen. Firewood? Hawthorn is good fuel when dry but has thorns and is more work than bucking and splitting fir.

Ended my walk pulling 3 young Daphne and a couple of sneeky Broom plants trying to avoid detection just outside the fence.
