Daphne Repeats

This day I systematically traversed the same area I visited on Days 1 and 8. (Traverse lines about 6 meters spacing) Actually I pushed the perimeter out a little making the area perhaps 30 x 40 meters. The score for that half hour of work was 119 first year Daphne and 27 of second year Daphne plants with seeds. (also 3 broom). The fairly low number of second year plants was satisfying as it means my previous year’s work was adequately thorough.

Total score for the three visits to this area this month 243 Daphne plants. Now that could seem discouraging after 8 years of Daphne control! Two things: the area was very heavily infested when I started and is now recovering really well with Oregon grape, Mahonia and sword fern (see Fig 1); and the adjacent neighbour’s area (in one direction) is stll heavily infested with mature Daphne providing seeds.

Fig 1 Area recovered from very heavy Daphne infestation. Note boulders cleared from adjacent pasture areas by Settlers, probably 100+ years ago.
