A Hawthorn Stump

A few years ago a large Hawthorn shrub at the edge of my Doug fir forest was uprooted by a heavy snowfall. It remained alive and grew many new branches like a coppice. Last fall I cut away all the trunk and the mess of branches for firewood. Now the stump has started regrowth. See first picture. Note: I cleared away overgrowth of trailing Blackberry etc. To more clearly reveal the sprouting Hawthorn, seen mostly diagonally up and to the left of the cut stump.

Sprouting Hawthorn is seen mostly diagonally up and to the left of the cut stump.

I cleaned off the new growth and some roots.

I don’t know how well the black plastic treatment will work on Hawthorn. It is effective for Cherry Tree stumps.

Score today included 6 Hawthorn seedlings (many more in the vicinity!) and 5 broom seedlings.
